The violin as we have come to know it dates from ca. 1550. The first instruments were created in Lombardia, Brescia and Cremona. Andrea Amati was the founder of an important family of violinmakers; his work and that of his sons influenced countless generations of violinmakers all over the world. His grandson Nicola Amati was the teacher of Stradivari who proved a genius and whose violins are eagerly sought after for their beauty of construction and tone
